Ca Bardassa

The building is in Fraciscio of Campodolcino (at 1341 m. above sea level) and is called "Bardassa" because of one of its last owner&´s nickname. It belongs to the "Comunità Montana della Valchiavenna" and it houses the ethnographic museum of the area, as a well kept witness of mountain house.
The building is a well-developed kind, typical of the area (there were other houses in the same village). The structure incorporates both the residential parts and the shed. A single big span-roof lagged with stones called "piòte" (typical stone of the area) covers the whole building and its top, located at the middle of the big front facing south, traces the division between the house and the barn, located west and east respectively.
The basement has four rooms for stable use: the two larger ones in the east side for cows and the smallest ones in the west side, under the dwelling, for goats, pigs, hens, etc.
The entrance door faces west and gives access to the central wide corridor "àndit" leading to all rooms and with a set of wooden stairs going up.
In the north side there is a kitchen built with stone and mortar walls and a big fireplace. The corridor opens into the fireplace, once used as the lighting entrance of the stove ("pigna"), at the opposite side of the kitchen.
In the south side, with reference to the corridor, there is the beautiful "stüa" (room with the stove) built with larch timber, preciously decorated inside and with stone and mortar walls outside. The "stüa" connects directly to a smaller room "stüin" which is warmed up by the stone stove, whose entrance is in the corridor. Above the "stüa" there is a room of the same size used as a bedroom with wooden covered walls; two others rooms are located on the side of the corridor. At the end of the mezzanine corridor you enter the large stable which takes two floors of the building. Mid-air there you will find a unique piece, a wooden balcony connecting the first floor corridor to the outside balcony. It´s in the front, heading south and passing through the stable.
At the moment it´s possible to visit this typical rural house, on the occasion of periodical exhibitions.
