Precious moments in the museum

Almost hidden away in the cobbled courtyard adjacent to the Chiavenna Church of San Lorenzo, and accessed by passing through an enormous green door, an impressive exhibition space opens out before you: the Treasure Museum of the Collegiate Church of San Lorenzo. On the right wall, a pair of crowns immediately grab your attention. Originally they adorned the heads of the Madonna with child within the Santuario di Gallivaggio, in Valle Spluga, a short drive away. We’re talking about two tiaras, each comprised of a base studded with coloured gems and eight leaves of pure gold subjected to an ancient embossed technique, which involves putting pressure on the back of the metal to imprint an image. In this particular, the leaves are decorated with flower clusters and the faces of delicate little angels. Years ago the two crowns were transferred to the Museum for their protection, leaving copies on the heads of the two statues. Following the landslide of 2018 which seriously damaged the Santuario di Gallivaggio, the wooden statue of the Virgin was placed in the Chapel of Santa Marta, adjacent to the Church of San Lorenzo. A temporary trip to Chiavenna to be close once more to her ancient jewels, whilst awaiting a much-anticipated return home.
