The museum was established in 1982 and its impressive collection represents a singular ecological record of the natural environment and human influence on Val Codera, which even today is permanently inhabited. It comprises a series of exhibition spaces located in different parts of the two historic settlements of Codera and San Giorgio, both only accessible on foot.
At Codera the ground floor of the Casa di Valle and two adjoining old buildings play host to the sections dedicated to homes: with furniture, utensils and traditional fittings, evidence of the production of textile fibres, dairy farming, a history of the chestnut (a fruit which for centuries was the staple diet of Alpine dwellers), the crafts undertaken, and a section illustrating precious metals discovered in the valley (aquamarine and garnet). Within a typical stone house in San Giorgio is a collection recounting the local influence of the Thirty Years War (17th C.), and tools and photographs allied to the extraction and working of the Sanfedelino granite, which for centuries characterized village life, accompanied by a reconstruction of the work of stone masons.
