The old town centre of Chiavenna

Along the main street of the old town centre you can notice ancient facades of great charm and considerable importance for the history of Chiavenna, which date back to the sixteenth/seventeenth-century and were recovered thanks to stratigraphic researches.

The Caurga
An ancient pot stone quarry, used since the Roman times to produce cooking pots (laveggi) and different architectonic elements.
Today, the small bridge erected over it connects the "Paradise" to the "Castellaccio", respectively a botanical-archaeological park and a natural museum.

Córt di àsen
It is one of the most beautiful, typical, undamaged medieval sites, with its columns made from pot stone which substain a wood balcony.

Neighbourhood of Oltremera
Small church of Santa Rosalia: wanted by the people from Chiavenna as a votive offering in 1629 when the lansquenets spread the plague while passing through Chiavenna.
Church of San Bartolomeo: during the Holy Week it is possible to visit the catafalque in honour of the Passion of Christ.
Pratogiano: It is a park with age-old chestnut and platan trees, surrounded by several "crotti", some of which are open to the public.

Gate of St. Maria
Main Gate of S. Maria: Built by the people from Chiavenna in 1741 in honour of the Grison officer Ercole Salis.
