We have chosen four destinations above 2000m in order to appreciate the magic of autumn in the upper mountains Dynamic when charged with the fine light of summer, more intense and yet delicate in autumn. The Alpine lakes of the Valle Spluga which from September to November put on their most lavish attire, throwing up some breathtaking spectacles impossible to ignore. Water in basins surrounded by high mountains reflected in the surface, which depending on the nature of the lake bed and the altitude, take on magnificent colours ranging from an intense blue to a delightful emerald green. A deliciously warm variety of hues in which it&´s a joy to lose yourself at the culmination of a day&´s ramble. In the following pages we&´ve chosen some of our favourites, all above 2000m, and yet easily accessible - representing a perfect autumnal outing.
Lago Nero dello Spadolazzo (2310 mslm)
The lake be reached in about an hour, starting the walk from Montespluga, near Madesimo. It is possible to leave and park the car near the old carriage road at the beginning of the village. The red-white-red path markers on the boulders help to orientate oneself. The arrival point offers unexpected views and colors. A special corner of the Alps, an ideal autumn destination. Better on a beautiful sunny day.
Lago degli Andossi (2069 mslm)
Just a few minutes walk from the reservoir in the Montespluga basin, this small lake is a fine autumn proposition with its rich vegetation which characterises its bed. The level varies greatly depending on the rainfall typical of the autumn period. Surrounding grasses and stunning snow-capped peaks accentuate the variety of colours that are reflected in this easily accessed lake.
Lago dell’Angeloga (2044 mslm)
Perhaps one of the most popular destinations above 2000 metres. Tranquil waters in which the summit of Pizzo Stella is reflected splendidly with the surrounding pastures and the azure sky providing the frame. A much appreciated autumn attraction with the handily situated refuge a definite plus.
Lago Emet (2175 mslm)
Following the path that cuts across the entire valley floor and connects Montespluga to the lake in about an hour and a half you will reach one of the most special places in the valley. Autumn throws up some magical glimpses of the serene waters of the natural basin at Alpe Emet. The walk is gentle with few variations in slope. For those who prefer it&´s possible to return directly to Madesimo.
