The mountains that form a magnificent crown to the whole lake broaden here like an amphitheatre, giving the Alto Lario a somewhat wider scope that borders on Valtellina and Valchiavenna. Green slopes rising up towards the high peaks seem to plunge gently into the blue of the lake and offer truly unique panoramic views. And there&´s every opportunity to explore these same places on foot or mountain bike: there are any number of paths that lead up to the peaks, through silent woodland, pastures and valleys crossed by clear streams.
The more intrepid can admire the landscape from a different perspective, taking to the skies with a paraglider and hangglider. Along the hillsides, on the other hand, an intricate network of ancient mule tracks and pathways wind, and lead to the discovery of time-honoured rural centres with churches snuggling within, and all immersed in an evocative, natural landscape; this is where the ancient Via Regina was built by the Romans on the western shore with the celebrated Sentiero del Viandante on the opposite bank. For less demanding walks, still remaining at the heart of nature, the cycle and pedestrian paths are recommended.
Hugging the edge of the lake they connect the coastal villages, and there are also itineraries that take you into the Pian di Spagna Nature reserve, a flat area with a wealth of animal species and vegetation where the lake waters merge with those of the river Mera. But perhaps above all the North Lago of Como is the home of water sports: thanks to the Breva and the Tivano, the two thermal winds that ripple the waters of the lake, the area is ideal for sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing. In calmer times you can try your hand at water skiing or search out those hidden corners on board a canoe or SUP.
And if you prefer to enjoy the lake in less exacting fashion, there are a number of centres where you can rent a boat to spend a few pleasant hours afloat. Or for those who want to remain on terra firma why not head for the free beaches to take in the sun with the occasional lake dip to cool off.
