Blink and you might miss it. Like many extraordinary man-made structures throughout our magnificent valley. Little vineyards and mountain dwellings over the years have become integral to the landscape. Such is the little chapel, Cappella della Borgna at San Carlo just outside Chiavenna itself. A brilliant white dot standing out amid lush greenery.
Leave the SS37 at San Carlo and park near the crotti at Fregee, then head off on foot following the signposts. The chapel sits 580m up along the old pathway to traditional farms and takes its name from the plateau at the cusp of two neighbouring valleys. It’s said that the populace were keen to build the chapel as a form of protection from regular earth subsidence. The date remains unknown but the ‘80’s saw an important restoration incorporating some quality fresco-work; it’s well worth a gentle 30 min. stroll uphill just for the magnificent panoramas that greet you. Views range along Val Bregaglia whilst southwards there’s the Chiavenna plain. Great picnic place. |
