Since 1955 the Sala family have provided an impeccable service to the many tourists who have made this particular place a quintessential point of reference.
At the Albergo della Posta it’s as though time stopped still at the beginning of the 19th century. The Sala family took over the running of the place fully 60 years ago and created a splendidly authentic aristocratic ambience within the magnificent and spacious rooms. A warm family welcome, accommodating bedrooms which have retained their originality and style, and a genuinely traditional cuisine are the standard bearers for a place which has become something of a landmark for travellers across the Splugen Pass. Its history begins in the first half of the 19th C when the Archduke Ranieri of Austria, Viceroy of the Lombardo Veneto Realm, commissioned the new road to Montespluga. 1822, when the landlord of the inn was from Teggiate and offered shelter and hospitality to travellers with wagons or on stage coaches along what had represented for centuries the shortest route between Milan and the Rhine valley. Both customs buildings and hotel have maintained their original characteristics, even today.
Fast forward to 1955 when the hotel was purchased by Maurilio Sala, taking over from the Tognoni family. Maurilio, and his wife Agnese set about seriously developing all that the hotel might propose, including the restaurant and adjacent shop. During this period Montespluga was a popular summer destination for both wealthy Milanese and the Swiss who would take long holidays here, enjoying the purity of the mountain air and the genuinely splendid hospitality on offer at the hotel.
In 1988 son Fausto took over the reins along with his wife Ines and together they continued to enhance its reputation, without radically changing its very essence and identity. By way of his particular passion Fausto has created a quite extraordinary cellar, becoming one of the highest wine merchants in Europe, home to a vast number of much-prized labels and proving extremely popular with wealthy foreign customers. Today, Fausto’s son Cristian - a noted chef - runs the operation. And perhaps the only other thing that’s changed are the clientele, moving on from the aristocratic Milanese to sporting groups bringing along their passion for ski-excursioning and trekking. But the hotel’s winning formula is precisely as it was, attention to detail the key, with a restaurant of the highest quality and guaranteeing family-style, discerning hospitality. |
