Lake Como winter on the lake

by Chiara Bizzanelli

When the peaks of the western Alto Lario become snow-capped, they provide the ideal setting for practising winter sports in a wild and unspoiled environment. It is an area that remains little frequented in winter but for those adventurous enough to tackle it with snowshoes or skis it can provide some memorable experiences. There are no refuges offering refreshments along the way and you will often find yourself being the first to tread down the pristine snow, so it is vital to set out both well-equipped and informed. Among the most recognised destinations in winter are il Monte Berlinghera (1930m) and il Bregagno (2107m). The first provides one of the easiest but most seductive of experiences: from San Bartolomeo you pass through woodland of fir and beech until you reach l’Alpe di Mezzo/Pescedo (1538m), from where the final push towards the summit starts. An area above Dongo which remains little-known is that of Valle Albano which extends from the lakeside town to the Swiss border. In winter it’s possible to move along for kms. without meeting another soul. And another less-travelled itinerary, but probably more strenuous route to Bergagno starts from the Regea Dam (Municipality of Garzeno). Up to the pass: a less demanding itinerary well worth tackling is that which leads from Bocchetta di Sant’Anna (1206m) to the passo del Giovo (1709m). The first stretch is a gentle slope in the shade of fir and beech trees; once you reach Mottafoiada you can choose between a gentle climb along road or a more challenging one taking on the slopes themselves.

The mountains above Lake Como provide attractive outings and anyone
