With summer well on its way, the western upper Lario area might well prove the ideal destination for lovers of outdoor activities. Water sports are an enduring attraction. Enthusiasts can choose between some of the more adrenaline-pumping disciplines, such as windsurfing or kitesurfing, and other perhap more contemplative ones like canoeing or paddling along (SUP). From Sorico to Cremia there are numerous specialist schools only too happy to provide relevant equipment for hire, or indeed introductory courses. There are also a number of sailing clubs where you can rent a boat or join a tour to appreciate the area from a privileged angle. For cycling enthusiasts the Alto Lario serves up over 200 km of cycle-pedestrian and forest-pastoral pathways connecting the lake to the surrounding mountains. Itineraries to suit all shapes and sizes: those who prefer to relax along the lakeside or take on the challenge of the slopes of the Alto Lario mountains.
Thanks to the intricate network of roads that connect the coastal municipalities as far as the mid-lake, two-wheelers can tackle less demanding variants or simply sections, while the more experienced and bold can try their hand at particularly technical descents.
One of the most spectacular itineraries starts from Dongo, a coastal municipality at 208 m above sea level and, in 26 km, reaches the 2,014 m of Passo Sant&´Iorio, on the border with Switzerland. The area hosts the Parco della Valle Albano, a protected area vital for the safeguarding of biodiversity and the mountain territory, with its wealth of flora and fauna typical of the alpine environment. And hikers too are spoilt for choice. There are trails to follow for all levels with the only constant being the fantastic panorama along the way. The territory boasts an abundance of bivouacs and refuges for anyone wanting to remain on high and spend some relaxing time in intimate contact with nature. One highly-recommended outing is the climb to Lake Darengo: the very special beauty of this pre-Alpine stretch of water compensates handsomely for the long and somewhat demanding journey meandering between crystal clear streams and dense woodland.
