Spell binding Soglio

The village sits at 1090 m and you can get there by car. It serves up unparalleled vista. The view opens onto the Valle Bondasca and the magnificent Gruppo Sciora, dominated by Pizzo Cengalo (3369 m) and Pizzo Badile (3305 m). Majestic granite peaks covered in snow even in summertime, with their physicality standing out savagely against the blue sky. The spectacular views blend with the landscape all around creating a stunning photogenic backdrop. And yet extraordinarily, from the valley below the village is pretty much invisible. Strolling through its narrow silent alleys is an almost spiritual experience adding hugely to the charm of a historic village once home to the Salis family who moved up from Como in the 13th century. The rustic houses comprising both wood and rock and perfectly restored alternate with elegant 17th and 18th century mansions with splendid gardens. The scenic pathway that sets out from Soglio is uniquely seductive. It winds through nature both lush and wild and ends up at Casaccia, at the foot of the Passo del Maloja. It’s a manageable enough outing but with ups and downs a’plenty and takes around 5 hours covering about 14 km. At the very outset is a place where everyone lingers a while to appreciate the peaks that dominate from across the valley. Two benches tempt the hiker to grasp their perfect moment, occupied solely in observing time passing by, following the clouds drifting across the sky, no need for any word or intervention, simply appreciating the flow of life for a few moments destined to remain unforgettable.
