No computer, or interfering mobile. Only the silence and the crunch of snow under our feet.
In the coldest of seasons the mountains throw up an abundance of opportunities to re-awaken our relationship with Nature, whilst abandoning Whatsapp, email and social networks. But first we must disconnect. Seriously. Renounce the use of your mobile for a while. Leave it in the jacket pocket, or backpack in flight mode. Just for a few hours. Enough to spend some quality time outdoors. Without “checking” constantly for new messages or taking photographs for social media. And what will it guarantee? This “privation”. The ultimate appreciation of the environment all around us. Vast expanses of snow, hushed woodland, immaculate slopes, but also distant birdsong, the flow of the river, and the particular scent of tree resin. Seeing and hearing our own breath. And as time passes, we will experience a growing sensation of serenity, not smartphone neglect! What we’re proposing for a winter of relaxation here in Valchiavenna, obviously within the limitations imposed by the current crisis, is simple enough: that we enjoy every moment of our time outdoors without the heartache or even the thought of having to post something on Instagram or share on Whatsapp.
So what prompted all this? Plenty, actually. Should the ski lifts be out of reach, enjoy a long, gentle outing on snow racquets. Or even a short excursion up to the Andossi or Madesimo’s valley floor might suffice. And if you’re not a fan of snowshoes on your feet, head into the woodland that climbs from Motta towards Lago Azzurro, or along the banks of the Liro at Campodolcino. But do it in silence. Those who enjoy skiing using skins can delight in views inaccessible to most, from some of the higher altitudes as close as possible to the majestic peaks. It will be a different winter. That’s for sure. And we all hope to re-emerge with fresh energies and new perspectives. And who’s to say that it won’t spring surprises and innovations on us, demonstrating a more profound way to get in touch with Nature, becoming more aware of its enchantment. Whilst always respecting the rules necessary for both ourselves and other’s protection, of course. Carpe diem.
