Simply sensational: ice climbing

Perhaps the most striking natural phenomenon I’ve ever witnessed was on a frozen waterfall during a desperate January with the most extraordinary ‘lion’ sculpture dominating all below. A splendid example of frozen water creating its very own art form.
I wasn’t tempted to climb up and say hello, but here’s someone who might: “Ice-climbing is clearly for free spirits, that’s its very nature. Every time is different. Routes need to change. Safety is uppermost. Frozen waterfalls present a world of ravines, candles, colour and sound, a world we interfere with at our peril. Literally. And by the way – no it won’t melt while we’re half-way up. We do our homework! And it’s not the stability of the ice which threatens – more the possibility of an avalanche from above, so there’s a range of variables to be considered.
Ice climbing is very much about technique, not strength, and there are appropriate guides which incorporate use of basic tools such as ice-axes, nails and crampons. The sport demands constant invention and improvisation, so it’s vital to know what you’re up against. Quite simply – it’s sensational!”
