Ski slopes accommodate all sorts of shapes and styles. Fluid and invariably arching gently. Enthusiasts of free heel skiing though talk excitedly about a particular historic and yet increasingly popular form: telemark.
So what’s it all about? A discipline simply involving sliding along which was ‘discovered’ officially in the mid 19th C? Not so. Telemark represents freedom of movement, energy, dynamism and grace¸ but also exertion and sweat. Why bother? Lots of reasons: it’s a change from all the downhill or snowboarding you’ve done for years; something new to try with friends; new sensations to appreciate; or quite simply because the elegance of it all intrigues you.
But why take telemark seriously? Hard to explain. Feelings that course through every cell of the body become almost addictive. Yes, it takes hours of practise, but satisfaction – both physical and psychological – and fun are guaranteed from the very start.
Elegance? Too right. It takes the whole body to create the classic curve, not just the legs. Physically exacting - but the exercise itself is highly beneficial. And what’s more: There is no competition. It’s about personal limits. And freedom – a combination of simple, natural actions, full of energy and vitality. It’s instinctive too - a constant quest for balance, and ensures vital contact between Man and Mountain.
