Places to discover Lago Azzurro in wintertime

Text and photos by Enrico Minotti

Alpe Motta is easily reachable by car from Madesimo along the “via per Motta” route, or by using the Sky Express underground funicular leaving from Campodolcino. And it’s from here that the engaging outing begins towards Alpe Motta and Lago Azzurro. Very popular during the summer, but for me it’s when the landscape is enveloped in the pure white of winter that it radiates a unique and enchanting charm. My meanderings in constant search of the joys and colours of the seasons lead me towards the beauties of end-of-autumnal foliage. Intense hues which are particularly photogenic. I was expecting to photograph the fine blue of the lake framed by the contrasting yellow/ orange larches all around. The first lights of dawn promised a clear sky and a magnificent day ahead, but even from the first bends of the Valle Spluga, I could see that during the night snow had fallen on the upper ridges and peaks. Reaching the lake, the sun has barely risen and I’m alone. There are at least 30 centimetres of virgin snow. Not a blemish, just an immaculate shimmering white under the sun’s attention and an almost blinding glare. The silence is absolute, and in the sharp air, the scent of sunkissed larch is inebriating. The beauty of the place is exhilarating, perfect from a photographer’s point of view. The surface of Lago Azzurro is entirely frozen and uniformly covered in snow. The scenario of the snow-covered woodland and the surrounding mountains is breathtaking, the sunlight somehow infiltrating, then reflecting between rock and snow-laden branch. Moments of calm reflection. I just hope I can manage to capture the very magic of the place. Anyone who appreciates walking within the silence and magic of woodland, should choose either snow shoes or racquets for a winter treat.
