Surfing on the snow, letting the wind carry you towards the horizon. This is the essence of snowkiting….” A winter discipline that combines skiing, snowboarding and kite surfing. The outstanding sensation you get when practising it is that of absolute freedom, experiencing the mountains in a completely different dimension.
The internet suggests that snowkiting took to life in Norway, where the mountains meet the wind. Something pretty similar had been noted in the early ‘70’s, but it is only relatively recently that the sport has gained popularity including here in the Alps.
From Haugastøl, Norway, snowkiting has spread rapidly becoming a genuine international trend. Today Haugastøl is one of the international capitals of the sport, attracting enthusiasts from all over the world eager to experience that feeling of “pure freedom” on the snow.
All you need is a snowboard or a pair of skis, a sail and a good helping of wind! Once you’ve donned the harness and attached the sail, you’re ready. A constant wind is not a requirement and just like on water, a light breeze will suffice, which is a regular feature in the mountains. The preferred terrain is on a plateau or a gentle slope which allow you to slide along the snow, and for the more experienced to perform spectacular acrobatics.
And let’s make it clear: you don’t have to go to Norway to enjoy the sport. Italy has plenty of perfect spots including within the province of Sondrio. Madesimo, on the Montespluga plain for example is very popular. In winter the natural basin between the frozen lake and nearby Val Loga is perfect for anyone looking for an alternative to the classic descents “on the slopes”. Open spaces on level or gently sloping ground far from the bustle of piste and ski lift: what’s not to like! Some years ago a group of friends - enthusiasts for both “lake” and “snow” kiting - have created a school to introduce anyone who fancies having a go..
So here we have a genuine alternative to the more traditional winter disciplines. The most commonly used sails in snowkiting are “box” sails, with no rigid structure and are designed to reduce risk. They allow for easier control and have a greater resistance to impacts. This type can be readily taken down in the event of strong gusts of wind, keeping the rider safe at all times.
