In Chiavenna, paper is by no means restricted to cultural environs, but it’s actually produced here. And a paper workshop is following a truly historical tradition. An ancient paper mill existed as long ago as 1763: in fact even today the back street “vicolo della Cartara” bears genuine witness. During the course of last year the old production process has been re-established at the Cà Rossa within the Parco del Paradiso, under the auspices of the Comunità Montana. The initiative remains restricted at the moment to schools but the idea of extending it to organised groups in the future is a distinct possibility. Instructive activities are directed towards primary school and early secondary school classes, tracing the history and structure of the written word through its evolution; from stone to wooden tablets, papyrus to parchment right up to paper itself and digitalm backup.
The informative activities have proved a huge success with participating youngsters who are involved in every stage of the artisan handiwork. It all starts with the maceration of the shredded paper to obtain a paste-like mixture. From this state, once fatigued by using specialised machinery, sheets are created using a vat of water and appropriate frames, ready to be drained and pressed. The sheet is then “hot-plated” using an enamelling machine and is ready for use after a drying phase. The second stage involves using a “mini print shop” with an antique printing machine using movable type which allows the students to take home an original hand-made printed sheet. The Cà Rossa workshop represents a means of rediscovering ancient crafts. Of both paper maestro and printer.
