Discovering a magical spot, ideal for anyone in search of a destination within the “respect to distancing” formula. Those who are already aware of the charms of Val Codera would surely confirm that in this current “distancing” period there couldn’t be a better destination.
A valley of 45 square kilometres of land without road access which has managed to hang on to a perfectly natural and vital environment, penetrated only along pedestrian pathways connecting ancient rustic clusters and surrounding pastures. An area which affords visitors the possibility of a wide range of landscapes: from the panoramic views over Lake Mezzola, to the canyons rough-hewn by the river Codera and of Val Mala; from the fairytale chestnut woodland of the middle valley to the glacial cirques of the valleys of Averta and Arnasca. And at a respectful distance indeed, Codera itself, namesake of the valley, small. intimate and which nicely reflects this dislocation: a hamlet shaped by granite, secluded and solitary, and lived the year round by a handful of proud and irreproachable residents and enthusiasts. What might surprise even those who have visited the valley many times over the years is the possibility nowadays of tasting genuine Alpine reality right here.
If you have the inclination simply to pack your bag with a little time and curiosity you’ll have the privilege of appreciating a village that appears timeless, but where you can stay in shared rooms or in a genuine small granite Codera house, forming part of a Widespread Hospitality project. The work was the brainchild of the local Associazione Amici della Val Codera, established 40 years ago with the brief of keeping the valley alive. If you stay in the village you can really experience life in the surrounding territory, enjoy guided tours of the small Museo di Valle and indeed get to know the haunts of the Streghe di Piana Cii, or meander along ancient pathways to see at first hand the plane of honeycombs containing the purest of honey produced within the Top Bar hives. You can also cook recipes using wild herbs from the meadows and chestnut groves, even assist in the maintenance of the terraced vegetable plots of the Biodiversità Alpina, which provide raw produce at almost zero metres to be transformed and served up at the tables of the Alpina, a tavern which has been welcoming friends and strangers alike to the centre of Codera since 1935. It’s a real focal point to discover the activities which continue to animate the village, and will invariably make you feel at home, yet in a really rather special environment. A splendidly alternative holiday, well worth looking into.
