The great migrants back on the wind

Silence reigns in the vast expanse of land surrounding the Lago di Mezzòla. It’s Autumn and something has changed. You note the colour of the vegetation, the gentle and constant lapping of waves on the sandy shores. But above all it’s the silence which prevails over a territory which until only very recently was teeming with life.

The vast numbers of migrant birds which stopped off here on their long journey to the warmer climes of the south, have left. You might just spot one or two stragglers finally taking to the air and leaving the cold lake waters and almost dry reed beds far behind.

The months leading into winter are particularly attractive for wandering along the trails and pathways that meander through the natural oasis of the Pian di Spagna. It’s a splendid opportunity to catch sight of the many and varied species of traveller as they rest, stock up on food and enjoy the last warmth of the autumn sunshine prior to heading off beyond the

Mediterranean, and for some – even south of the Sahara. For many it will be a one way trip. For others, the experience of new love and extraordinary discoveries will simply confirm the repeating cycle of life, a new generation and fresh journeys ahead.

In all this the natural Oasis of the Lago di Mezzòla plays a vital role. It provides crucial and safe refreshment. An easily recognisable and much appreciated feeding ground adopted over the centuries by these tireless travellers whether heading north in springtime or as right now – far to the south.

Valchiavenna’s full of fascinating opportunities in Autumn but it’s certainly well worth dedicating a few hours to this magical spot with its very special atmosphere exemplifying life’s constant and rhythmic change.
